What is an AcceleDent? How does It help in Teeth Repositioning?

The AcceleDent is an FDA-cleared medical device that can be used to stimulate the bone remodeling needed to reposition your teeth in your home in addition to your braces and aligners. The device is supposed to be used for just 20 minutes a day.

The AcceleDent works on the basis of soft pulse technology, which facilitates the movement of the teeth by applying constant gentle pressure to the teeth via micro pulses. The light force will cause the teeth to move faster, accelerating the bone remodeling process. Using it every day can speed up the treatment by 50% and is very safe to use. The pressure applied is less than that of a power toothbrush but is still very effective. AcceleDent also helps make your braces or aligners feel more comfortable to wear.

This device consists of two main portions. One portion of the device is a mouthpiece, which the patient bites onto during its use. The patient is asked to bite on it during use; this mouth portion is connected to another piece that stays outside the mouth. This portion [activator] houses the component that provides the cyclic forces [vibration]. The activator includes a battery, motor, rotating weights, and microprocessor for storing user data.

The patient should connect the mouthpiece to the activator and uses the device once daily for 20 minutes. The applied forces from the device are at 0.2N [grams]. This low force is intended to be barely noticeable a not uncomfortable. The device can be used with all the FOAs as well as clear resin aligners[Invisalign]. The activator is placed in a docking station between uses to both recharge the activator and shows compliance data.

AcceleDent device increases the rate of orthodontic tooth movement and can be used either FOAs or clear aligners, thus offering flexibility. This is useful given the mix of orthodontic therapies available and particularly since some patients have combination therapy utilizing both FOAs and clear aligner therapy. Short term daily use for 20 minutes in an advantage for the patient.

The disadvantage of this device is expensive, and the treatment just focuses on the cosmetic appearance of your smile but doesn’t fix the underlying issues. The advantages of this device are it results in improved aesthetics and function of the dentition and face. And the treatment is of short duration, effective, and doesn’t negatively impact their appearance during treatment.
